Big Horn Hospital Association is honored to receive three beautiful handmade quilts that will support our Breast Cancer Awareness efforts and serve as a reminder of the importance of early detection.

Two of the pink quilts were generously crafted and donated by Bev Laufer of Hettinger, North Dakota. These quilts carry a deeply personal meaning for me. Bev is the mother of Julie Hammond, my daughter-in-law, who lost her courageous battle with breast cancer two years ago. Julie was a devoted mother to five beautiful children and was loved by so many. She is missed every single day. Through Bev’s generosity, Julie’s memory will continue to touch lives and inspire women to take charge of their health through early detection and screening.

We are also grateful for the donation of a beautiful Star Quilt, created by Paige Cain and Zarah Blacksmith under the guidance of their teacher, Mary Torske. The Star Quilt holds special significance in many Native American cultures, where it is considered one of the highest gifts of honor and respect. Often representing the Morning Star, it symbolizes hope, guidance, strength, and the connection between generations. Its message of compassion, support, and community makes it a meaningful addition to our Breast Cancer Awareness campaign.

These quilts represent more than fabric and thread. They tell stories of love, remembrance, hope, and generosity. They honor those we have lost, celebrate survivors, and remind us of the strength found in family and community.

As part of our Breast Cancer Awareness efforts, one of the pink quilts will be awarded through a special drawing. Every woman who receives a mammogram at Big Horn Hospital Association during the months of October and November will automatically be entered for a chance to win. The second pink quilt and the Star Quilt will be raffled, with all proceeds benefiting Caring Hands at Big Horn Hospital Association.

Caring Hands supports the mammography program by helping pay for mammograms for women who do not have insurance coverage. At Big Horn Hospital Association, we believe no woman should go without this important screening because of financial concerns. If you do not have insurance, we have programs available to help cover the cost of your mammogram. No woman should be denied access to this potentially life-saving service.

Breast cancer affects not only individuals but entire families. Early detection remains one of the most important tools in the fight against this disease. As we honor Julie’s memory and recognize the generosity of Bev Laufer, Paige Cain, Zarah Blacksmith, and Mary Torske, we encourage all women to schedule their annual mammogram. A simple screening can save lives, provide peace of mind, and help ensure more families have many years together.

Together, through awareness, education, early detection, and the support of our community, we can continue the fight against breast cancer while honoring the lives of those who have inspired us along the way.

Schedule your annual mammogram today, at Big Horn Hospital 406-665-9210. It could save your life.
